At 8pm tonight [Perth time] Kim Cofino will deliver the pre-conference keynote address for the 2009 K-12 Online conference.

The following two weeks, December 7-11 and December 14-17, over fifty presentations will be posted online to the conference blog and conference Ning for participants to view, download, and discuss.

Live Events in the form of three “Fireside Chats” are scheduled on the  conference events page.

Everyone is encouraged to participate in both live events during and after the conference as well as asynchronous conversations.

Over 120 presentations from 2008, 2007, and 2006 are available, along with archived live events!

On Monday 26 October the Australian School Library Association Inc. and Pledger Consulting Pty Ltd will announce the winner of the 2009 Australian Teacher Librarian of the Year Award.

The Australian Teacher Librarian of the Year Award recognises and honours an exceptional Australian teacher librarian in a school setting whose professional practice has a positive impact on student achievement and information literacy.

The ASLA XXI Biennial 2009 Conference Organising Committee invites abstract submissions for presentations at the 2009 Conference.

This Conference aims to bring together professionals from all over Australia and neighbouring countries by providing opportunities to engage, celebrate, debate, and explore the challenges and issues of teacher librarianship and school libraries. The Conference will provide a strong focus on information literacy, and an emphasis on literature and engagement with young adult and children’s authors. It is anticipated that over 300 delegates will attend the event including teacher librarians, library technicians, library officers, teachers, principals and administrators from government, Catholic and independent schools and universities across Australia.

We are now calling for innovative, practical and researched papers in all topics of interest to school library staff, particularly those exploring the Conference strands: engage, explore and celebrate. These strands are designed to engage the diverse range of school library staff, teachers, learners and cultures in our schools; to reflect on current practice; celebrates successes and explore the potential for the future.

ASLA XXI Biennial 2009 Conference Organising Committee

Save the Children Australia aims to ensure that all children, regardless of gender, race, country of origin or religious belief have the means for survival, receive protection and have access to nutrition, primary health care and basic education.

Shocked by the suffering of children during the Balkans War, Eglantyne Jebb became a pioneer campaigning for worldwide safeguards for children. The UN Convention on the Rights of the Child, adopted by the United Nations in 1989 and now ratified by nearly all countries worldwide, has its roots in her pioneering work.

Eglantyne was also the first to introduce the idea of sponsoring a child in a foreign country and using celebrity endorsements, getting the likes of famous playwright George Bernard Shaw on board.

To fulfil the main criteria for eligibility for this award, the teacher librarian must be:

• a qualified teacher librarian
• a member of WASLA
• endorsed by his/her principal and two members of the school community.

Nominate one of your colleagues for this award before 31 May 2008.

PALS, which stands for Partnership, Acceptance, Learning and Sharing, is a reconciliation initiative run by the Department of Indigenous Affairs (DIA) in partnership with the major sponsor, BHP Billiton.

Is your school interested in advancing the reconciliation cause? Then entering the 2008 PALS Schools Reconciliation Awards could be just what you’re looking for. Schools entering for the awards receive a grant of $750 to fund their project.

School projects can be entered in any of the following categories:

• Arts & Culture
• Health
• Sustainable Partnerships

 The awards are presented annually at the Wardarnji Aboriginal Cultural Celebration. Wardarnji is held on the second last Saturday of November on the Fremantle Esplanade.
