International Day of Peace

September 15, 2008

Established in 1982, the United Nations’ International Day of Peace – celebrated each year on September 21 – is a time when individuals, communities, nations and governments highlight efforts to end conflict and promote peace. The United Nations has produced a new website which encourages people to promote Peace Day events anywhere in the world. Even the simple activity of lighting a candle or taking a walk for peace can be promoted on the site.

Global Education through OzProjects has created a website to support peace building as part of the celebration of International Peace Day, which makes use of technology to explore the Peace topic.

International Peace Day is also a Day of Ceasefire – be it personal, political or military. People around the globe are encouraged to make peace in relationships as well as in the world conflict zones.

Resources relating to the Peace Studies Topic and War and Conflict can be accessed in the CMIS Resource Bank Database

The ASLA XXI Biennial 2009 Conference Organising Committee invites abstract submissions for presentations at the 2009 Conference.

This Conference aims to bring together professionals from all over Australia and neighbouring countries by providing opportunities to engage, celebrate, debate, and explore the challenges and issues of teacher librarianship and school libraries. National Threatened Species Day

    September 2, 2008

National Threatened Species Day is held on 7 September each year to encourage the community to help conserve Australia’s unique native fauna and flora. We can all take action to prevent further extinctions by restoring healthy numbers of endangered species and ecological communities in the wild.

In 1996, the 60th Anniversary of the death of the last Tasmanian Tiger in captivity, was the initial catalyst for the establishment of a special day as a way to showcase Australian threatened species.  Threatened Species Day aims to encourage greater community support and hands-on involvement in the prevention of further losses of Australia’s unique natural heritage.

The main aim of National Threatened Species Day is to raise community awareness about conservation issues and to encourage people to undertake activities on the day. Information about the day can be found on the main National Threatened Species Day website.

Teachers can use information on the website to explore the issue from different aspects. The CMIS Theme page – Threatened Species is also a useful tool for exploring the topic.
